Wood that is stronger than STEEL!?

OK, this is really cool.  I have already asked my cousins (the owners of HammerSpace, an awesome maker-space, here in Kansas City, that could very likely be a whole post of there own) and they are willing to help me see if we can make this!  It will have to wait until this summer, but this will be EPIC!

Now there are many things about it that nay sayers are claiming, like that it seems over complicated and not that much stronger.  This is very true, metal is faster and easier to use, but the science is fun!  All the same, I would love to have that as an option in my classroom.  Having this sort of thing as a classroom as a sample would be so great!
